Who are Techex?

  • Industry experts of live video broadcasting. Providing expertise for clients such as BBC, Disney, Sky and NBCUniversal.
  • Nearly 50 years of experience in the industry. Well respected in the industry, but relatively unknown outside.
  • They provide bespoke solutions, strategic technology and software. Their superior industry knowledge something they are rightfully proud of.

The Brief

  • To refresh the Techex brand, develop a visual language and create a industry leading website.
  • To visualise and develop their brand vision of a ‘starling murmuration’.
  • Techex were relying on referral and word of mouth for new business, but felt they were being held back by a lack of serious online presence. They felt their site did not reflect their success or ambition.
  • I was lead designer on this project, responsible for research, planning & driving workshops, creative direction and full website design.

Reflecting priorities within timelines

  • The client side team were highly passionate about their business, and very keen to keep communication high.
  • Therefore the initial discovery and collaborative workshop timeline was extended by 2 weeks to allow for a more thorough brand evaluation.
  • We regularly presented research, prototypes and creative ideas back to the client. Aiming to avoid any ‘big reveal’ moments.

Understanding the audience

  • Through workshops we were able to determine that Techex’s website had 3 main user groups.
  • Engineers Looking for highly specific technical information. Very high knowledge, low purchase power. Advocates.
  • Product Managers. Well informed technically, able to decide on tech usage. Interested in capabilities and use cases.
  • C-Suite. Lower interest in technical detail, looking for top level approval and legitimacy. High standards, viewing Techex comparatively to AWS etc. The final decision makers.

Creating a hierarchy of information

  • It was evident that the main user groups had differing levels of technical knowledge and would benefit from a site structure to accommodate their interests.
  • The site was designed with a progressive level of technical information available to the user.
  • Initial landing pages present a top level overview of Techex solutions, using illustrations and animations to convey complex topics.
  • Sub-pages provide a higher density of information, but still provide illustration of larger topics. They provide a route to articles and long form content.
  • Articles and solutions house the most in-depth technical content, with the necessary complexity for engineer level knowledge. Content is broken down into clear defined topics to allow all user groups to gain understanding,

Look & Feel

  • Through initial conversations with stakeholders, it was apparent that Techex had no real ‘Brand’ identity available to them. They had a new colour pallet and a logo produced by a branding agency, but had no direction on how these assets could be used cohesively.
  • Competitor and parallel research was collected and presented to the client in workshop format. This was used to gauge the clients likes + dislikes, and build an understanding of their vision for Techex’s brand.
  • Using this understanding, potential routes were presented to the client. Implementing their colour pallet and visual language in different ways. Allowing the client to decided what they felt best represented their values.
  • This process was a resounding success, and a highlight for the client. It built trust between both parties, creating a positive atmosphere for the remaining stages of the project.

Digitising a Natural Phenomenon

  • Techex came to us with an image of a Starling murmuration. They felt it represented the complexity and choreography of Live broadcast. It was also important to Techex that this visual was represented in the site.
  • The client specified it had to be dynamic, voicing concerns over using a video or pre-recorded animations. We felt the only way to realise this vision was to create a ‘live’ solution, and simulate a ‘murmuration’ in real time.
  • I worked closely with the head of development to realise this ambitious idea. Starting with a simple 2D proof of concept, iteratively working on solutions and presenting to the client at key stages.
  • The result of this research and development was a fully interactive flock of up to 250,000 ‘birds’ flying in a three dimensional area, providing a fully responsive and scalable interpretation of a Starling murmuration
